Common questions

Is the salary paid every month of the year?
No. Pay is for the months you are on board. Leave between contracts is usually unpaid, so think in yearly terms.
Can we get an education loan?
Many banks give education loans for approved courses. Ask your bank which courses and institutes it accepts, and what security it needs.
Why is there no official pay scale?
Each shipping company sets its own pay. Minimum wages for ratings are agreed internationally, but officers' pay depends on the company, ship type and rank.
