Can I join?

Height, weight and medical

There is no fixed height in the rules. A DG Shipping approved doctor decides if you are fit for life at sea.

What the medical checks

  • Eyesight, near and far, to the standard for your job.
  • Colour vision. See eyesight rules.
  • Hearing.
  • General health, and fitness for hard work and emergency duties.

When it happens

The pre-sea medical takes place after you are selected for a course. Have your eyes checked earlier, before you pay any fees.

Common questions

What is the minimum height for the Merchant Navy?
The DG Shipping rules do not set a fixed minimum height. An approved doctor decides if you are fit. Some institutes and companies set their own height or weight rules, so read their admission notice.
How often is the medical repeated?
Seafarers repeat it regularly to keep their medical certificate valid, usually every one or two years.
